Three Ways to Solve a System of Two Equations
Graphing Elimination Substitution All three methods are exactly what is implied with the names. The first method we will try will be by graphing.
3
Graphing EX 1: Solve the system of equations by graphing: 3x – 2y = -6
y = -4/3x + -2
4
Elimination If given a system of two equations, we can simply multiply an entire equation so that the coefficients of ONE VARIABLE are OPPOSITES (one negative, one positive) so that the variable can get eliminated. EX 3: Solve the system of equations by elimination: 1.5x + 2y = 20 2.5x – 5y = -25
5
One More Elimination EX 4: Solve the system of equations by elimination: 2x – 4y = 6 3x – 8y = -2
6
Substitution EX 5: Solve the system of equations by substitution:
2x + 3y = 8 x – y = 2 EX 6: Solve the system of equations by substitution: -2x + 3y = -12 -3x – 2y = 10
