2. What is an IRP?
In every aspect of our lives, reading is important. You need to be able to read instruction manuals to put together and operate electronics, to bake a cake, or to find out what’s going on in the news. Reading can also be a fun way to relax. We will create an Individualized Reading Program (IRP) that will help you learn what kind of books you like, what your reading strengths are, what you need to work on, and how to set goals for your reading. With an IRP, you get to read what interests you.

3. Choosing a book… Bring a book from home
Purchase a new book from a bookstore/electronic device
Get a book from the media center
Get a book from our classroom library (must check out and sign the form)

4. Follow these criteria when choosing an IRP book:
Books need to contain at least 100 pages.
Picture books/comic books are not acceptable.
Your book must be approved by me.
You must decide on a book and not switch!
Most importantly, choose a book that interests you!
Must have your book in class for a grade on Tuesday, August 18th!

5. Reading Goals Each student will read 1 book each semester.
That means you are responsible for 2 books this year.
At the end of each semester (December and May), you will have to turn in either a written report or complete a project/presentation for your book.
Dates and specifications will be discussed later.

6. How you’ll be graded:
You will be required to read your IRP book during designated class time (Tuesdays) and have your book with you daily. No book= 0 for that day.
You will also read your book during any extra class time you have.
You will be required to write about your chosen book throughout the semester (quick writes, journals, etc.)
You need to have your chosen book written down on my form—and you will need to have it in class no later than next Tuesday—August 18th!
