Properties of Algebra
2
Commutative Property Means to MOVE AROUND !
The order is different but the answer is the same! 7 + 9 = 9 + 7 2 ● 3 = 3 ● 2 Commutative Property
3
Associative Property Associative = hangs out together
The (groups) change! The order does NOT!!! 3 + (9 + 4) = (3 + 9) + 4 8 ● (5 ● 2) = (8 ● 5) ● 2 Associative Property
4
That usually means it is an Identity
The sum/product is the same! Id. of + Adding 0 to a number = 13 Id. of x Multiplying 1 to a number 7 ● 1 = 7 Notice that there are MORE numbers on one side of the equal sign than the other?! That usually means it is an Identity Identity Property
5
Which property (if any) are these?
15 + (5 + 8) = (15 + 5) + 8 A 20 – (12 – 3) = (20 – 12) - 3 Not = 34 Id 20 ÷ 5 = 5 ÷ 20 Not = C (2 + 3) + 5 = 5 + (2 + 3) C Which property (if any) are these?
6
Simplifying as much as possible!
Associative p ● (1 ● 6) p ● 6 (5 + x) + 9 Commutative (5 + 9) + x 14 + x Simplifying as much as possible!
