3 TPCASTT Title: Someone is not able to pause for death to catch up to them. Paraphrase: Someone’s life is spent rushing from one thing to the next, so when Death comes for them, they are finally stopped. The poem is a reflection of the things in life that they now see on their way to “eternity.” Connotation/Figurative Language: -Death (personification) Carriage Immortality (personification) -Labor & Leisure Civility Passed Setting Sun -“Only gossamer my gown” “My tippet only tulle” -House “Since then ‘tis centuries” -“Horses heads” Eternity Attitude: The author seems to be writing gently, easing the narrator towards her death, pulling her away from her busy life, slipping into eternity. I think that, beneath the gentle demeanor, there is also a slight sense of regret or nostalgia of some kind. Shift: The shift comes in the second to last stanza- there is a change in scenery, where the character Death and the narrator arrive at their destination, the place the narrator calls “eternity.” Title: The woman was so busy that she did not even have enough time to stop for death, and now she came to understand that she had more time than she ever thought she did. Theme: The narrator, who couldn’t ever slow her busy life, comes to the realization that, in her end, she has all the time she could ever want. And now, she slows down and takes a look at all the things in life.

4 Transcendentalism in “Because I could not stop for Death”
Spiritual realm- Rising above the impulses in life, as well as society. The rising above the impulse is seen when death stops her from continuing to rush around as she has always done throughout her life. Spiritual realm- To move from the rationality of life to the, The women passes through all the things that she has seen in her life such as the schoolyard, the fields, the sun; until she reaches a place that could be eternity. Meanwhile, she has been traveling with death and immortality and that in beyond rational ideas. Free thought (idealism)- All her life she has rushed around, thinking as we all do that there is never enough time. However, when she is taken by death, she has the ability to think on her own, and she realizes she has all the time she will ever need.

5 The Connection In today’s society, our generation is constantly in a hurry. We have been raised with the same idea that the woman lived by: we never have enough time. Emily Dickenson is trying to convey that, despite what we have always been told, we will end with far more time than we will ever need. There are different stages in our lives today including childhood, teenage years, and adulthood. This stages are seen in the poem from the children in the schoolyard, to the growing fields, to the setting sun at the end. These are things which we need not coast through.
