The rise of the Byzantines
The eastern Roman Empire was known as the Byzantine Empire. It included Greeks, Egyptians, Arabs, Armenians, Jews, Persians, Slavs, and Turks Constantinople was the capital of the Byzantine Empire Constantinople was located between the Black Sea and the Aegean Sean, at the crossroads of trade routes between Europe and Asia

People of the early Constantinople initially followed Roman ways: They spoke Latin and enforced roman laws Eventually, the Byzantine Empire became more influenced by the Greece: they spoke Greek and practiced Greek culture Some ideas from the Slavs, Egyptians, and Persians also mixed in

Emperor Justinian Justinian was the emperor of the Byzantine Empire from AD Empress Theodora, Justinian’s wife, helped her husband rule Byzantine- gave him advice and advocated for women rights Justinian tried to restore the Roman Empire by invading Western Europe and northern Africa

Byzantine Civilization
The Byzantine Empire lasted for about 1000 years. They depended on trade and it was the center of trade between Europe and Asia Silk weaving was a major industry Byzantine emperors supported artist and architects Education was very important and supported by the government Boys went to school and studied academic subjects Girls did not attend school but were taught at home

Religion Hagia Sophia was the religious center of the Empire and a great architectural accomplishment Mosaics showed saints Most written literature was religious

Women Marriage and family were important Women obtained some rights
Some became educated They became regents, people who stand in for rulers who are too young or too ill to govern
