Day 3: Siegfried Sassoon and Ghazal Poetry

Ghazal Persian poetry form that takes its name from the Arabic word meaning “the talk of boys and girls” Contemporary Ghazal don’t usually rhyme – but have a few very important features: 5 to 15 Long-lined couplets (2 line stanzas) – yours needs at least 6 Expression of mystical thoughts relating a central theme Ghazal introduce a scheme/refrain in line 2 that carries through the end of the poem in the second line of each couplet Agha Shahid Ali compared each ghazal couplet to “a stone from a necklace," which should continue to “shine in that vivid isolation.”
