1 Unit 3A-Roaring Twenties
Mr. Fulton

2 Elephants in the Office! (Republican Presidents)
Three Presidents in a row…all conservative Harding, Coolidge, Hoover Laissez Faire Capitalism!! (What is it Mr. Fulton?) Favored lower taxes Higher tariffs Few regulations Stopping strikes …is this different from modern times? Party had some scandals…but benefitted from the overall prosperity of the time

3 Gilded Prosperity While incomes increased for many…
Gap between managers and workers grew larger (sounding familiar?) Not all industries grew (ex. railroads, iron, textiles) Farmers went into debt producing more for WWI, which naturally created food surpluses and low prices afterwards Industries increased production as consumers began using easy credit Thus created installment plans How is this going to be a problem? Both for producers and consumers?

4 Spread of Information School enrollment and spending increase dramatically Curriculum now includes more vocational training, meaning training for industrial jobs Radio becomes more used and important than newspapers and magazines Mass media spread arts/leisure

5 Growth of Industries! Growth of Industry! (Four Steps to Profit)
Step 1: Laissez Faire Capitalism Step 2: Decline of Labor Movement (why….?) Step 3: New Technology Step 4: Profit Automobile causes urban sprawl, boosted social and economic activities…but how? Electrical Conveniences (Irons… Stoves…Radios!) Advertising methods…radios! (Made people’s wants seem like needs)

6 It wasn’t just overly glamourous/sexist ads…
Yeah… this was still a thing…

Harlem and other black urban communities suffered from overcrowding and poverty (What may have led to vast numbers of people moving towards a dense urban environment? Think previous unit) NAACP: anti-lynching laws Marcus Garvey-Back to Africa Movement

9 New Kinds of Arts Literature Music Dance
F. Scott Fitzgerald- The Great Gatsby Ernest Hemingway- Coins the term “The Lost Generation” Music Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong Dance Swing Dance

10 Women Gain Some…Independence?
19th Amendment: Women get the vote Flappers were usually dresses…what…above the knees?! Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex in a casual manner, smoking, driving automobiles, and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms. From yesterday, how does Birth Control and electrical conveniences play into women and society?

11 Stock Market Crash… Here We Come!
Warning Signs… Farm prices drastically fall after WWI Farmers can’t pay back loans after government kills agricultural contracts Banks = uninsured Increase in personal debt Buying stocks on margin-borrowed money from Stock Broker to purchase Stocks What happens next?! Don’t worry… we’ll cover that… next time on…. Slideshows with Mr. Fulton
