War, Natives were pushed further and further west Treaty of Stanwix – took land in NY and Penn from the Iroquis tribes There were several treaties that the Indians claimed that they were forced to sign under duress included the Treaty of Fort McIntosh – took land in the Ohio Valley Treaty of Fort Harmar – took land in northern Indiana The Treaty of Greenville: In 1794 American troops led by General Anthony Wayne defeat British supported Indians in northern Ohio at the Battle of Fallen Timbers The Treaty of Greenville which was made after Fallen Timbers included: American acknowledged that the Indian owned the land in the Ohio valley After payment to the Western Confederacy, the Indians gave up most of Ohio to Americans The Indian agreed to be placed under the protection of the U.S. Assimilation Rejected: Natives were encouraged to assimilate (act America)

New Englanders began moving into the land now available in the Ohio Valley Southern Migrants move to the west : Kentucky A few, wealthy individuals owned significant amounts of land ½ of white men in the south owned no land in KY Mississippi and Alabama With the invention of the cotton gin – production of cotton exploded and led to an expansion into MI and AL

3 Chapter 7 226-234 The Jefferson Presidency:
“Virginia Dynasty” for the next 25 years the Presidents will all be Virginians – Jefferson, Madison and Monroe Jefferson ordered the U.S. to attack bases of Barbary pirates who had been attacking U.S. ships in the Mediterranean Sea. Jefferson (a Democratic Republican) had to deal with a Federalist judiciary branch – John Adams appointed a slew of Federalist judges before he left the White House – the so-called “midnight judges” ***Marbury v. Madison*** - S.C. rules the Judiciary Act of 1789 unconstitutional and creates a precedent of “Judicial Review” Jefferson’s administration eliminated the excise tax, kept the Bank of the U.S. despite opposing the Bank when Hamilton proposed it.

4 A Republican Empire Is Born
Jefferson and the West: Pinckney’s Treaty – US and Spain, US could navigate the Mississippi, store goods in New Orleans at the mouth of the Mississippi River. The Louisiana Purchase: France (Napoleon) gained the LA territory from Spain in 1803; US feared they would be cut off from access to the Mississippi River, France fears that the U.S. will just take the LA territory Napoleon needs money to try to finance keeping his sugar islands Jefferson wants to buy New Orleans – ends up buying the whole Louisiana territory for $15 million dollars. Impact of LA Purchase? Doubles the size of the US, Jefferson switches from strict to loose interpretation Secessionist Schemes: Aaron Burr (Jefferson’s VP) flees to the SW, tries to create a new country Lewis and Clark Sent to explore the newly acquired Louisiana territory and in 1806 provide the first maps of the area west of the Mississippi River
