1 Can You Feel the Difference
7th Grade

2 Warm-Up What are variables?
When we say we keep something constant what do we mean? Why do we have a control group? Name 2 elements of a good experiment?

3 Warm-up Get out Variables Homework What is a variable?
List the three types of variables Students want to know if the amount of sleep affect grade point averages. Please list the independent, dependent, and a constant variable.

4 Getting Started In your journal add new title to Table of Contents “Can You Feel the Difference”. Go to the appropriate page and title it also. Add the words and definitions of the following; Validity- how close the research is to being close and dependable Trial – each set of repeated data

5 Getting Started Open your Issues in Life Science (IALS) book to A-20
Write down the challenge question What are the variables in this experiment? What are some variables we could keep the same?

6 Doing the Investigation
Does everyone have the same ability to see or hear? How about to feel or touch? What part of your body—your arm, palm, or finger—is the most sensitive? (the smallest distance at which they can still feel two points) Why? The goal of the activity is for you to report accurately how many points you actually feel, and not to try to guess.

7 Part B Do you think there are more similarities or differences in responses among people? How can we find out? Look at Student Sheet 5.1

8 Doing the activity Look at step 10…identify and list variable you were able to control and variables you were not able to control on a T-chart in journal. Why is it important that this activity be reproducible? Why does it matter whether everyone in the class conducts the experiment in the same way? The idea is that a reproducible experiment will allow you to compare results.

9 Put these two tables in your journal: My Class Data
All Class Data Sensitivity .7cm 1.5cm 2.0cm # Kids

10 Warm-Up What is a qualitative observation?
What is a quantitative observation? 3-5. Name 3 elements of an good experiment (things that make an experiment solid!) ***New Entry in journal “Studying People Qualitatively and Quantitatively”

11 Closure Add this definition to your journal:
Variable- is a factor in an experiment that you can test (Independent Variable), that responds (Dependent Variable), or that you keep the same (Controlled Variable) Graph your class data on the back and on the graphing paper graph all class data Complete Analysis Questions 4, 5, 6
