2. Introduction
In this lesson, the following topics will be addressed so that students may become more knowledgeable about the state of Ohio as they learn specific facts about the state: When Ohio joined the union; as the birthplace of seven U.S. presidents; State Symbols; Agriculture; Natural Resources; and Ohio’s most famous tourist attractions.
This lesson is designed for a fifth grade social studies class and fulfills the Ohio Content Standards for such as follows:
Describe characteristics of Ohio
Introduce new vocabulary related to productive resources- natural resources

4. Ohio is nicknamed The Buckeye State!
Ohio Becomes a State
Ohio is nicknamed The Buckeye State!
(means “great river”)
On March 1, 1803, Ohio joined the union, becoming the 17th state.
Ohio is bordered by five states:
Michigan
Indiana
Kentucky
West Virginia
Pennsylvania
And by one of the five Great Lakes:
Lake Erie
The Capital of Ohio is Columbus

The stars represent that Ohio was the
seventeenth state admitted in to the
United States.
The stripes represent the roads and
waterways of Ohio.
The hills in the background, the river and the harvested fields symbolize the diversity of Ohio's geography.
The bundle of wheat symbolizes Ohio's fertile harvest and its dependence on agriculture.
