What enables you to take in and breath out air? 2. Hypothesis: 3. Materials: Ballon 2-L plastic bottle with the bottom cut off 30-cm circle cut from plastic bag Masking tape Rubber band

2 4. Procedure: STEP 1: Push the closed end of a balloon through the mouth of the bottle. Stretch the open end of the ballon over the top of the bottle. STEP 2: Fold the 30-cm circle in half twice. Twist about 2.5 cm of the folded corner, and secure it with a short piece of masking tape to make a handle. STEP 3: Cover the open bottom of the bottle with the plastic circle so the handle is on the outside of the bottle. Secure the plastic tightly to the bottle with a rubber band. There should be some slack in the plastic.

3 STEP 4: Draw the following chart.
STEP 5: Gently push and pull on the handle to move the plastic in and out. Record what you observe. STEP 6: Hold the bottle so its mouth is near your cheek, and move the surface of the plastic in and out. Record what you observe. Observations Step 5 Step 6 Step 7

4 STEP 7: Put your hands at the bottom of your ribs, and take a deep breath. Record what you observe (how your body moves). 5. Conclusion: 6. Explain which parts of the model represent the lungs, chest cavity, and diaphragm. 7. From your observations, draw a conclusion about how your diaphragm moves in your body.
