2. What is academic dishonesty?
Any type of cheating that occurs in an educational setting

3. What types of academic dishonesty are there?
Plagiarism: Taking ideas or words or statements of another person without due acknowledgment.
Example: taking a statement from a resource and replacing a few words to make it look different
Cheating: Any attempt to give or obtain assistance during an exercise
Example: showing your test answer to someone else
Sabotage: Acting to prevent others from completing their work.
Example: willfully disrupting the experiments of others

Fabrication: The falsification of data, information, or citations in any formal academic exercise.
Example: submitting a lab report for an experiment which was not conducted or completed
Deception: Providing false information to an instructor concerning a formal academic exercise
Example: giving a false excuse for missing a deadline or falsely claiming to have submitted work
Professorial misconduct: Professional acts that are academically fraudulent equate to academic fraud.
Example: making up grades

5. What is peer pressure?
Influence exerted by a peer group that encourages a person to change his or her attitudes, values, or behavior in order to conform to group norms
Approx. 70% of high school students have admitted to cheating

6. Why peer pressure is so hazardous
Consequences are not assigned to an entire peer group
Consequences are delivered to individuals
Individuals must make their own decisions to avoid these consequences

7. Why is academic honesty important?
People who are dishonest in class are more likely to be dishonest elsewhere
Grades represent a person’s knowledge and ability. Because of academic dishonesty, not all students with the same grades actually did the same work or have the same skills. This makes grades less dependable for colleges and employers.
