1 United States History II
Road Map for Success: Cold War Abroad It wasn’t a war fought in Alaska. It wasn’t a snowball fight. It was a war of ideologies. It was a war of words. It was a war with no front lines. It was the Cold War. At the end of World War II, both the United States and Soviet Russia believed their economic and political systems directly threatened each others. While Communist Russia tried to spread its ideology and influence throughout the world, America believed it must contain the spread of communism to again, keep the world safe for democracy. It is hard to imagine the war that literally shaped the power structure of the modern world was a war where not one bullet was directly fired between the United States and the Soviet Union. But, that is exactly what happened. Sports, technology, ideology, diplomacy and patience were the ingredients that composed this truly fascinating war. You will master the following standards: USII.18: Analyze the factors that contributed to the Cold war and describe the policy of containment as America’s response to Soviet expansionist policies. USII.19: Analyze the sources, and with a map of the world, locate the areas of Cold War conflict between the U.S. and the Soviet Union USII.21:Analyze the failure of communist economic policies as well as U.S.-sponsored resistance to Soviet military and diplomatic initiatives contributed to ending the Cold War.
