Fluency

2 Definition: Freedom from word identification problems that might hinder comprehension in silent reading or the expression of ideas in oral reading. (Harris & Hodges, 1995, p. 85)

3 Fluent reading means: Automatic recognition of words.
Appropriate phrasing and expression. Fluent reading allows students to focus on meaning of activity or enjoyment of activity.

4 Strategies MUST BE WITH EASY TEXT
Modeling - read alouds, poems for two voices. Rereadings - handout checklist for student to monitor own reading. Reader’s Theater - video.

5 Strategies Con’t Visiting readers - to younger classrooms.
Dictated experience stories. Timed Repeated Readings - Activity & graph handouts.

6 Be Sure to: Model phrasing, teaching explicitly if needed where to pause, tone differences. Make time for silent sustained reading.
