1 Friday-1/25 Target/Goals:
I can describe a major Influenza (virus) Pandemic that occurred outside of the U.S. I can compare an Epidemic to a Pandemic.

2 Recap of 1/25 Epidemic-an outbreak of disease in one population or country at a given time Cholera (bacteria) caused a major epidemic in London in the 1800’s. In various countries around the world it still occurs. For thought: How can 3rd world countries solve/prevent cholera outbreak

3 Virus: Virus are nonliving, microscopic pathogens
Virus cannot create their own energy, reproduce on their own, or “grow. These characteristics are required to be viewed as a living creature.

4 Virus Continued: Virus “live” inside host cells. They insert themselves into the cells of animals and humans

5 Viral Reproduction In order to reproduce, virus take over a host cell and force the cell to make more viral DNA Once the cell has created the new viral DNA, the new viral clones break out of the cell and leave to infect new host cells

6 Viral Treatment and prevention
Viruses cannot be cured by medication once contracted. You can only treat the symptoms. However, virus can be prevented by getting a vaccine. Example: Getting a shot/vaccination to prevent chicken pox

7 Influenza (the flu) One of the most common types of virus
Vaccination does exist to prevent it, BUT there are many different types/strains of the flu

8 Pandemics Pandemics are large outbreaks of disease that spread to MANY areas/countries Global Pandemic is possible(world is very interconnected)

9 Pandemic Research Protocol
You will be assigned a famous Pandemic that occurred as a result of Influenza You will have access to articles and devices(phone or laptop) Goal: Fill in your fact sheet on the pandemic you are assigned Next: We will do a pair and share so you can hear about other Flu outbreaks from around the world

10 Monday-1/28 Target/Goals:
I can describe a major Influenza (virus) Pandemic that occurred outside of the U.S. I can compare a virus to bacteria

11 Pair and Share expectations:
You will have 10 minutes to circulate around the room Present/Describe your flu information/Get info from others Goal: at 5 details per Influenza outbreak (ie. 10 details total on the flu you did not research)

12 Class Pandemic Qs 1)What do all of the pandemics seem to have in common? 2)How do the flu pandemics DIFFER from the cholera epidemic we mapped yesterday? 3)Why do you think it is considered very easy/high risk for a pandemic to break out in modern time? (Consider technology, population, etc)

13 Bubble in Tests Do NOT bubble in the first section that goes It says zipgrade ID above it (you don’t have one) Begin bubbling at the number 1 on the bottom section After bubbling in 1-10, the bubbling goes back to the top for 11-20

14 Virus vs. Bacteria You will receive an article (Do NOT write or mark on it) Read the article, and on the next page in your notebook (pg 49 or 50) create a venn diagram comparing virus and bacteria THEN, write a short essay (2-3 paragraph) on virus/bacteria are similar, and how they are different Paragraphs must be 5 or more sentence

15 Venn diagram.. Similar in middle, differences on sides
