Unit 8: World War II Est. 1869 March 7th, 1941 Price 6d The Great Dictator b Chaplin's First 'Talkie' The Great Dictator is an American comedy drama and anti-Nazi film starring, written, produced, scored, and directed by Charlie Chaplin. It is his first 'talking' picture, as well as his most commerically successful motion picture. Controversial Film Was Well Received in the United States and U.K The picture was a complete satire of fascism. It was a contemporary criticism of Hitler's rise to power. At its full release, the United States was still formally at peace with Nazi Germany. Film Advanced a Stirring, Condemnation of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini's fascism Italy, antisemitism, and the Nazis, whom he mocks in the film as “. machine men, with machine minds, and machine hearts”. 1
