When someone is choking, you must perform the abdominal thrust maneuver. abdominal thrust maneuver A technique of dislodging a particle that is blocking a person’s airway. 3

The Abdominal Thrust Maneuver
Abdominal thrusts can remove an object that is blocking the airway. When you think someone may be choking, ask, “Can you make any sound at all?” If the victim cannot make a sound, the airway is most likely blocked. Ask someone nearby to call 911, and begin the abdominal thrust maneuver. 4

The steps of the abdominal thrust maneuver are: Position yourself behind the person. Place your fist above their naval. Grasp your fist with your other hand. Thrust inward and upward four or five times in rapid succession. 5

Severe Bleeding To stop severe bleeding, use direct pressure.

Severe Bleeding Bleeding can be life-threatening when arteries or veins have been severed in the injury. If a wound is covered by clothing, cut or tear away the clothing. In severe bleeding, the blood will be welling or pulsing out of the wound, and the amount of blood will seem dramatically great. 7

Severe Bleeding In almost all cases, bleeding can be controlled by continuous, direct pressure. Elevate the injured part to encourage blood to drain back into the body and to slow the blood flow from it. 8
