*Start Film (if time) *Closing: one film technique I learned is…

2 WHAT WILL I LEARN TODAY? FOCUS: How do you read a film?

3 HOW DO YOU READ A FILM? Watch this clip and tell me what you see…
What makes a film a film? Verses let’s say a book a book? Discussion… REVISIT SCENE—new things you are seeing?

4 FILM TECHNIQUES: copy the BOLD!
1. STORYLINE: the story the director creates, the plot and the events they want to show you. 2. SCRIPT: is the dialogue between the different characters. Directors take careful time picking the lines they want their actors to use. (Think about what lines the director did/didn’t use from the book).

5 FILM TECHNIQUES: copy the BOLD!
3. ACTING: Who plays what characters is important, and so are the names of the actor. Why did the director pick this actor vs. another? How does the actor make the character come to life? 4. SPECIAL EFFECTS: how they make something believable vs. distracting. Are the special effects good enough to make you think this scene, object, event is real?

6 FILM TECHNIQUES: copy the BOLD!
5. MUSIC: The soundtrack and background music is a very different experience when watching a movie; it can set a certain mood. What songs or tempo does the director use in certain scenes? How does that make you feel? 6. SET DESIGN: This is the setting & filming location and takes a lot of time to create so you feel like you are there with the characters.

7 FILM TECHNIQUES: copy the BOLD!
7. EDITING: This is how the scenes transition from one scene to another. FADE, DISSOLVE. Notice how transitions will show the passing of time. 8. CINEMATOGRAPHY: This is what the camera is doing in each scene. DOLLY TRACKING, BOOM CRANE, ANGLES, and ZOOM. Think about the camera man—what is he doing?

8 FILM TECHNIQUES: copy the BOLD!
9. COSTUME/MAKE-UP: This is how the director dresses the character, and maybe how they show their aging or personality. 8. LIT. DEVICES: What creative devices is the director using? REPETITION, SYMBOLISM, CHARACTERIZATION. This is not just limited to books!

9 BEGIN FILM STUDY… Let’s see how this works in the film, The Great Gatsby…
