6. SVA Individual Work
* a verb must agree with its subject in person (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) and in number (singular and plural). Singular verbs end in “s.”
1. Simple sentence=a singular subject takes a singular verb; plural subject takes a plural verb.
2. Watch out for prepositional phrases or other interrupters that separate the subject and verb.
ex. Jim, along with his friend Joe, (is/are) taking a computer class.

7. 3. Two subjects joined by “and” need a plural verb unless the two subjects represent one thing/person.
ex. Bill and Bob (is/are) best friends.
ex. My coach and teacher (is/are) Mr. Tillman.
ex. Rock and Roll (is/are) my favorite type of music.
4. Two subjects joined by “or” or “nor” need a singular subject unless the second subject is plural.
ex. Bill or Bob (is/are) the leader of the club.
ex. Bill’s brothers or Bill (is/are) leading.
ex. Bill or his brothers (is/are) leading the meeting.

8. 5. Watch out for Subjects in Unusual Positions.
* Because the subject is after the verb, you might use the wrong verb.
ex. There (is/are) a large moving van in our driveway.
ex. (Do/Does) your sisters go to Central Middle School?
ex. At the end of the hallway and to the right (is/are) the restrooms.
6. Watch out for collective nouns and indefinite pronouns. First determine if the word is singular or plural.
ex. The team (is/are) playing well.
ex. The team (is/are) turning in their uniforms.
ex. Some of the milk (is/are) rotten.
ex. Some of the cookies (is/are) stale.

9. 7. Watch out for plural nouns with singular meaning and singular nouns with plural meanings. Also watch amounts.
* Plural but singular- mathematics, news, politics
ex. Mathematics (is/are) something that I enjoy.
* Singular but plural- pants, scissors, goggles
The goggles I lost (is/are) purple.
* Amounts- four hours, two-thirds, ten dollars
ex. Four hours (is/are) a long time to spend taking a test.
ex. Ten dollars (is/are) scattered all over the floor.
