2 Gee vs. Saltman Neo-liberal Market-driven reform
Based capitalism and free market trade Private industry is given public dollars to improve social problems. Trust the market to guide us through government support and venture philanthropy. Critical Pedagogies Revolutionary Based on democratic ideas and can include Marxist elements. Government and corporations have reached a mutual agreement to use public and private institutions as a way reproduce hegemony. Consciousness, reflection, and praxis = overthrowing existing oppressive forces. Democracy! 3 Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed

4 Banking System THE BANKING SYSTEM = Oppression
the teacher teaches and the students are taught;  the teacher knows everything and the students know nothing;  the teacher thinks and the students are thought about;  the teacher talks and the students listen -- meekly;  the teacher disciplines and the students are disciplined;  the teacher chooses and enforces his choice, and the students comply;

5 Banking System Continued…
the teacher acts and the students have the illusion of acting through the action of the teacher;  the teacher chooses the program content, and the students (who were not consulted) adapt to it;  the teacher confuses the authority of knowledge with his or her own professional authority, which she and he sets in opposition to the freedom of the students;  the teacher is the Subject of the learning process, while the pupils are mere objects.

6 Dan’s analysis… Saltman (2016) takes it a step further:
the corporation teaches and the teachers/students are taught;  the corporation knows everything and the teachers/students know nothing;  The corporation acts and the teachers/students have the illusion of acting through the action of the corporation;  the corporation chooses the program content, and the teachers/students (who were not consulted) adapt to it;  the corporation confuses the authority of knowledge with its own professional authority, which it sets in opposition to the freedom of the teachers/students;

7 A Juxtaposition Critical pedagogies ideally begin with meaningful student experience and education contexts that foster interpretation of how broader social forces produce these contexts and meaningful experiences. Such interpretation ideally forms the basis for social intervention. While critical pedagogies aim to expand understanding of the production of both knowledge and subjective experience, perspective methodologies and positivist forms of schooling aim to decontextualize knowledge and reduce comprehension of experience to the individual.
