Motion…Speed… Velocity…Acceleration
2
Motion 1. Change in position during a time period
2. Determined by Reference Point “You are Here” 3. 3 types of motion Speed Velocity Acceleration
3
Speed Equation S=D/T 1. Definition: Rate at which an object moves
2. Formula: Distance divided by time 3. Units: m/s or km/s
4
Speed 4. Constant speed - speed that does not change
5
Speed 5. Instantaneous speed - speed of an object at a particular moment in time 6. Average speed- add speeds, divide by total number
6
Speed 6. Graphs: Time: x-axis Distance: y-axis Constant speed
Changing speed
7
Velocity Equation D/T Plus Direction
1. Definition: Describes speed plus direction (n, s, e, w) 2. Formula: Distance divided by time PLUS direction 3. Units: m/s or km/s, north, south, east or west
8
Velocity 4. Velocities can be combined
velocities in same direction = Add Velocities in opposite direction= Subtract
9
Velocity 5. Graphs: Time: x-axis Distance: y-axis
(same as speed graphs but also has direction)
10
Acceleration 1. Definition: Rate of change in velocity
Speeding up, slowing down, changing direction 2. Units: m/s/s or km/s/s
11
Acceleration 3. Increasing velocity - positive acceleration
4. Decreasing velocity - negative acceleration- deceleration
12
Acceleration 6. Graphs X- axis- time Y-axis- velocity
Constant acceleration Changing acceleration
13
Momentum Equation mom=m x v 1. Definition: Depends on object’s
mass and velocity Related to force upon impact 2. Formula: Mass x velocity 3. Units: kg x m/s
