Determine Reasonable Answers
TRIP A truck driver completes 35% of his trip and then stops for lunch. He has driven 150 miles. He estimates that he is about 200 miles from his destination. Is his estimate reasonable? Explain. Understand The truck driver has driven 150 miles, which is 35% of his trip. He thinks the remaining 65% is about 200 miles. Plan Make a bar diagram to represent 100%. Example 1

x = 150, so x = 450. The entire trip is
Use a Graph Solve 150 miles is 35% of the trip. 35% is about Divide the bar diagram into three parts, each representing a third of the total miles. x = 150, so x = 450. The entire trip is about 450 miles, so he is about 450 – 150 or 300 miles from his destination. Example 1

Answer: He is about 300 miles from his destination.
Use a Graph Answer: He is about 300 miles from his destination. So, 200 miles is not a reasonable answer. Check The entire trip is about 450 miles and he has 65% or about of the trip left. Since ● 450 = 300, 200 miles is not a reasonable estimate. Example 1
