Day /10.1 The refugee crisis prompted Congress to establish the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands–better known as the Freedmen’s Bureau. The Bureau was given the task of feeding and clothing war refugees in the South using surplus army supplies. Beginning in September 1865, the Bureau issued nearly 30,000 rations a day for the next year. It helped prevent mass starvation in the South. 1. What was the Freedmen’s Bureau? 2.
