4. Behavior Management
We use a clip chart behavior management system. Your child will receive a sticker on their behavior calendar in their daily folder if they have followed directions.
If your child is having difficulty following directions, using kind words or completing their work, it will be marked on their behavior calendar as well. Students will also receive a weekly Work Habit Grade which will reflect their level of completion of work for the week.
Explain your method of managing behavior. Do you use a clip chart? Card pulling system? Something else? Include a picture if you can!

5. Standards Based Grading
Level 4
Extends targeted grade level standards.
“Since I can do/get this, I can figure out new things!” 3
Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standards with evidence of application.
“I get it and I can use it.”

Review the Standard base grading
Make comment about papers being graded with a “P” means they were pages that were meant for practice and the grade was not recorded.
Any paper that comes home with an “A” means it was an assessment piece and the grade was recorded.

6. Literacy
This year in reading we will:
Understand the importance of reading
Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension
To be on grade level, students should read on a LEVEL J by the end of the school year.
Explain what students will be required to learn/do in reading this year. You might want to talk about Daily 5/Literacy Centers/Workstations if you use them in your classroom. In fact, you might want to duplicate this slide and add your center information to a separate slide.

7. Writing This year in writing we will:
Begin to see ourselves as authors and illustrators who write a variety of texts (poetry, informative, narrative and expository texts)
Apply phonetic principals to unknown words and spell known words correctly.
Use legible handwriting forming letters correctly and spacing between words
Explain what students will be required to learn/do in writing this year.

Used to determine student’s reading level
The student must be able to retell the story before going to the next reading level. It is more than just being able to call out words.
Written comprehension- Student must be able to read comprehension questions from Level F and beyond. Students must address the question and provide adequate written details in order to be considered proficient on that level.

9. Math This year in math we will:
Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction
Extend the counting sequence to 120
Understand place value
Use place value understanding and properties of
operations to add and subtract
Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length
units.
Tell and write time to the hour and half-hour
Represent and interpret data.
Reason with shapes and their attributes
Relate addition with subtraction
Explain what students will be required to learn/do in math this year.

10. Science This year in science we will:
The focus for first grade is on students using their senses to make observations and using their own rules to classify living and nonliving objects. Identifying types and levels of organization helps students find useful ways of describing objects and organisms. Guide student learning to continue to emphasize the unifying concepts introduced in kindergarten, including evidence, explanation and measurement as well as the introduction at grade one of order and organization. The strands provide a context for teaching the content goals.

11. Social Studies This year in social studies we will:
analyze how individuals, families, and groups are similar and different

recognize and understand the concept of change in various settings

express geographic concepts in real life situations.
apply basic economic concepts to home, school, and the community

13. Fun Stuff First Grade will have 2 field trips.
- in house science field trip in the fall
- Zoo field trip in the spring
Book and Bite in the classroom
Parent Conferences are held at the end of first quarter.
We will begin using parent volunteers as soon as children have established classroom routines. All volunteers must be registered with WCPSS each year.
Please send in a change of clothing for your child.
Specials are not on the same day each week – 6 specials this year
Snack daily – please send in a snack for
your child.

15. Homework Letterland homework nightly with Letterland test on Friday
Nightly math homework
Read 20 minutes each night
All homework is to be returned to school on Friday.
Please check take home folders DAILY for any important information.
