3 High School Scheduling Committee
Timeline: June 2018 – December 2018 Goals: Recommend a common schedule for all comprehensive high schools that provides students with appropriate opportunities for enrichment, exploration, acceleration and remediation. The schedule must also address meeting the new minimum WA Core 24 graduation requirement. Parameters: Same length of school day – Meet 1080 instructional hours – Do not exceed classroom teachers’ student caseloads – Common high school schedule – Consider input from students, staff and community.

6 High School Scheduling Committee
Recommendations: Proposed modified 7-period day with 2 days of blocking and flex time Represents an appreciation for blocked periods Maximizes contact time per course while maximizing the number of times a class meets per week (4x), still allowing for some blocking (1x) It reduces the impact of a student's absence on his/her learning because the course meets four times per week The one time per week blocked period allows for more depth of instruction (specifically for science labs, Socratic Seminars, class discussions, writing instruction/drafting, art projects, etc.)

Recommendations: It provides 28 opportunities to earn the state mandated 24 credits It allows for interests to develop and be explored while retaining an academic focus This increased prep time (teach 5 out of 7 courses) for all teachers should enhance the kind of feedback teachers provide to students and reduce the time needed to get student work back to students It allows for building principals to use flex time for regularly scheduled interruptions (assemblies, drills, surveys), thus not impacting instructional time OR impacting instructional time equally (by placing such an interruption on a 7 period day)

Student interest should drive the 7th period course selection process. Strive for a “balanced” learner (intellectual, physical and emotional). Example: PE course for increasing fitness Art course for creativity and emotional wellness Make up a credit in a class (rather than summer school) Re-take a course for grade improvement

11 Question – Does the 7th period mean more homework?
Each course only meets 4 times a week – reducing the number of opportunities for teachers to assign homework. Flex Time will offer academic intervention/homework time. Less homework at home. Continued professional development with staff focused on purpose and high-leverage uses of homework.

12 Question – Will there be new courses for students to choose from?
Yes. For the school year, many departments will offer ISD courses (already approved) that have traditionally not been offered at Skyline. For the school year, many departments/teachers are currently in the process of developing new ISD courses (18-month process).

13 Question – Will there still be options for 0 or 8th period courses?
No – the 7 period day allows all courses to be offered during the regular school day (some music courses are an exception for 0-period).

14 Question – Does the new schedule still allow for the IB Diploma Program?
Yes – most IB students will have more flexibility to choose classes to meet the mandatory minimum 6 IB courses. It’s absolutely possible to offer the IB Diploma Program on a variety of different types of schedules. In fact, there are many examples of schools throughout the world with blocked classes or more than 6 periods in their schedules that successfully implement the IB Program.

15 Question – Should a student take 7 IB courses?
Skyline is NOT recommending this. Theory of Knowledge (11th graders) has been moved to the school day – previously held as a 0-period (before school). A 7th period elective course (i.e., PE or art) may also be used to meet CAS (creativity, activity, service) requirements during their senior year. CTE, PE and Health will continued to be waived for IB diploma students.

16 Question – Does it work to take a Part Time Running Start schedule?
Class periods on block schedule days meet at different times of the day. More planning may be needed to create a functional part time Running start/Skyline schedule. The Running Start Student Contract does not allow students to miss Skyline courses for college class/activities.

17 Question – How are extended learning periods structured (80 minutes)?
Instructional staff will participate in professional development opportunities to maximize the instructional effectiveness of extended learning periods. Best practices include: Adjusting activities every 15 – 20 minutes Do no rely solely on lecture – use a variety of strategies each day Adjust the scope and sequence of learning targets Over plan

18 Question – What if a senior has already met the 24 graduation required credits?
Seniors that are on-track to graduate are eligible to take a slightly reduced schedule by completing a senior waiver through their counselor. Seniors may only reduce their schedule by 1 period (1st or 7th). This can impact college admissions and scholarships.

24 Intervention Scheduler - gives Skyline the ability to schedule students to the support they need, while offering extended learning opportunities for others. Scheduling System: Teachers can request/require a student to attend a specific Flex Period (students in jeopardy). Students are assigned the support area groups they need. Students have the opportunity to self-select the intervention they need.
