1 RBMA REVIEW

2 ON THE DAY OF THE EXAM: You must bring your prep booklet. You are allowed your dictionary & thesauraus. You will receive an objective from the magazine editor with the prescribed angle in the shape of a sentence. Example: Examine the consequences of how the media sexualizes women. Ask yourself: Are consequences : negative or positive? Do consequences refer to cause or effect? Do consequences refer to problems or solutions? We will inform you: What SPECIFIC angle to discuss in relation to the topic you have researched.

3 THE HEADLINE IS A TITLE OF YOUR MAGAZINE ARTICLE.
HEADLINE (TITLE) THE HEADLINE IS A TITLE OF YOUR MAGAZINE ARTICLE. THE GENERAL TOPIC NEEDS TO BE OBVIOUS FROM READING THE HEADLINE. PLAY WITH THE USE OF WORDS USE ALLITERATION USE REPETITION CREATIVELY MAKE IT RHYME USE POP CULTURE AS A REFERENCE

4 SECONDARY HEADLINE CONTROLLING IDEA: MAIN TOPIC + ANGLE BE SURE TO INCLUDE A TOPIC + PRESCRIBED ANGLE IN THAT ONE SENTENCE. THIS SENTENCE IS YOUR SECONDARY HEADLINE. IT PROVIDES THE READER A CLEAR IDEA AS TO WHAT TOPIC YOU WILL BE EXPLORING AND FROM WHAT ASPECT / PERSPECTIVE.

5 LEAD (HOOK) THE LEAD IS A CATCHY PARAGRAPH THAT IS SUPPOSED TO CONNECT AND HOOK THE READER TO THE MAIN TOPIC AND ISSUES AT HAND. IT CAN BE DONE IN THREE WAYS: 1) VIVID DESCRIPTION (METAPHORS, ONOMATOOPEIA) 2) STRONG/SURPRISING STATEMENT 3) ANECDOTE (3RD PERSON, DISCUSSES A CHARACTER`S SITUATION IN RELATION TO THE TOPIC)

6 Is the topic clear? Is the angle clear? Is it shocking? Poor Tracy
LEAD EXAMPLE Tracy was driving on her way to her birthday party when she heard a loud ring coming from her iPhone. Tracy thought to herself that she only needs to take a quick glance to see who texted her. As she takes her phone, she reads the text: Where you at? And as Tracy begins to type: On My…. She misses her exit and crashes into a tree. Happy Birthday Tracy… Is the topic clear? Is the angle clear? Is it shocking? Poor Tracy

7 BODY #1 AND BODY #2 Develop the author`s controlling idea that expands the main topic of the article into subtopics (splitting your ideas). Important things to include: Subheadings are obligatory. They should be catchy too. Personal viewpoints of people interviewed. Opinions from authorities and experts. Quotes and interviews (TAKEN FROM ARTICLE AND AUDIO CAST)* Anecdotes and stories. Specific names, places and dates. Photographs, tables, diagrams and graphs. Focus your writing on the target audience: TEENAGERS.

8 BODY EXAMPLE Topic: Text & Driving Angle: Consequences Subhead: Texting & Dying We all know that talking on the phone and driving is illegal. However, we never really talk about texting and driving. Texting while conducting a vehicle can have pretty major consequences including death. According to studies done at Harvard University, 2010, 3000 deaths are caused by car accidents alone where the driver was distracted by a cellular device. Can you believe it !?! Based on the same study, you can do the math and you`ll realize that a whopping 74% of the deceased passed away in a car with a texting driver. What would you rather do put your phone down and stay alive, or text and die?

9 CLOSE LAST PARAGRAPH THAT CLOSES YOUR ARTICLE AND SUGGESTS AN APPROPRIATE OBJECTIVE OR ACTION PLAN. SIMILAR TO RE-HOOK Use a "circle ending." This technique utilizes an idea or a phrase from the lead, bringing the reader around to complete the circle. Suggesting an appropriate course of action. Encouraging a change of attitude or opinion. Now that you wrote all about this topic through this angle, what is society`s or YOUR next move ?

10 Close example Tracy would have been celebrating her 23rd birthday the day she crashed into a tree and died. Instead, she is now on her way to her own funeral. Next time you get into a car: turn on your blue tooth or hands-free application and/or do not answer any texts. One word you type can lead to the end of one person`s life.

11 QUOTATIONS DIRECT INCLUDES: QUOTATION SIGNS. MICHAEL (2012) STATES: « BLAH BLAH BLAH » INDIRECT INCLUDES: NO QUOTATION SIGNS. MICHAEL DESCRIBES ….

12 ELEMENTS TO INTEGRATE PULL QUOTE:
EMPHASIZING SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN BY COPYING THE TEXT BUT ENLARGING THE FONT OR BOLDING IT. «PULL» TEXT FROM THE BOTTOM AND BRING IT TO THE TOP. SIDE BAR: A SMALL RECTANGLE THAT CAN BE CONSIDERED A SURPRISING, DID YOU KNOW FACT?, ILLUSTRATION: INTEGRATING A PICTURE WITH A SMALL CAPTION EXPLAINING THE PHOTO.

13 REMEMBER !!! IT NEEDS TO BE INFORMATIVE (research)
IT NEEDS TO BE CATCHY TO A CERTAIN EXTENT WE DO NOT NEED YOUR OPINION SINCE IT IS STRICTLY RESEARCH BASED. IT NEEDS TO BE INFORMAL (use contractions) IT NEEDS TO INCORPORATE QUOTATIONS, THE AUDIO CAST AS WELL AS INFORMATION FROM THE PREP BOOKLET THAT IS PARAPHRASED AND PROPERLY SOURCED. IT NEEDS TO LOOK LIKE A MAGAZINE ARTICLE

14 HEADLINE: OMG. LOOK AT HER BUTT.
SECONDARY HEADLINE: Women are constantly devalued and sexualized in the media. TOPIC: WOMEN IN THE MEDIA ANGLE: CONSEQUENCES OF HOW WOMEN ARE SEXUALIZED GROUP 1: LEAD + PICTURE (WITH CAPTION) GROUP 2: LEAD + PICTURE (WITH CAPTION) GROUP 3: SUBHEAD + BODY + SIDEBAR GROUP 4: SUBHEAD + BODY + IMAGE (WITH CAPTION) GROUP 5: SUBHEAD + BODY + SIDEBAR GROUP 6: CLOSE GROUP 7: CLOSE
