12 Happy Monday! 5/7/18 DO NOW: How far are you on the paraphrase and direct quote sheets? You need to fill one out for 4 of your 5 sources. Will you be ready to hand that in at the end of class today?

13 LT/SC Learning Target—students will be able to use the internet to obtain valid resources on their chosen social issue. Success Criteria—I can fill out the paraphrasing and direct quotation paper that I will be able to use in my research paper.

14 Direct Quote IDENTICAL to the original, using a portion of the researched materials. They must match the original article word for word and you must give the original author credit by citing the sources.

15 Paraphrasing Your own rewrite of information and ideas expressed by someone else. A paraphrase must be presented in a new form. It involves putting passages from your researched work INTO YOUR OWN WORDS. When you paraphrase someone else’s work, you must give the author credit by citing the source.

16 Paraphrasing and Direct Quote sheet
Fill in all resource information. Similar to the 5 source sheet. Find quotes or paraphrases that you will use in your paper. (first column) Write your commentary. (Second column) Circle what part of the essay this will help you with…definition, cause, effect, long term or short term implication, or proposed solution. Do this for 4 of the 5 sources!!

17 Happy Tuesday! DO NOW: Please look at your checklist. Have you handed in your 5 source sheet? Paraphrase and direct quote sheet? If not, why? If so, do you have a good idea on how to state your introductory paragraph? ***NOTE****New due date for research paper: Thursday, MAY 24th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

18 LT/SC Learning Target—Students will begin to write their research paper on a social issue of their choice. Success criteria—I will write my introductory paragraph for my research paper and hand it in before leaving class today.

19 Introduction Writing the introductory paragraph can be a frustrating and slow process -- but it doesn't have to be. If you planned your paper out, then most of the introductory paragraph is already written. Now you just need a beginning and an end. Beginning Sentence(s)-Here's your chance to introduce your topic and grab your reader's attention. NEVER start your paper saying, "In this paper, I will" or "This paper is about." Start strong. In your research, have you come across an odd factoid or interesting quote? Try starting your paper with that. How about starting with an anecdotal story or humor? Middle Sentences-The middle sentences cover the different points in your paper. If you've already planned which order to write the points in the paper, you already know which order to place them in your introductory paragraph. (Hint: it's the same order). You don't have to include every single point, but make sure the important ones get in there. Ending Sentence -All the previous sentences have been building up to this: your thesis. Your thesis statement expresses the overall idea of your paper and show where you stand on the topic.

20 Sample intro paragraph (not social issue)

21 Breakdown of introduction
1st Sentence I lead with a quick factoid about comics. 2nd & 3rd These sentences define graphic novels and gives a brief history. This is also how the body of my paper starts. 4rd Sentence This sentence introduces the current issue. See how I gave the history first and now give the current issue? That's flow. 5th Sentence Since I was pro-graphic novels, I gave the opposing (con) side first. Remember if you're picking a side, you give the other side first and then your side. 6th Sentence Now I can give my pro-graphic novel argument. 7th Sentence This further expands my pro-graphic novel argument. 8th Sentence This is my thesis statement.
