2 Warm Up: KWL Chart What do you know? What have you learned so far? List as many facts as you can! What do you want to know? Is there a specific tribe or group you want to know more about? What did you learn? How has this helped you with your understanding of Native American history? What did you find interesting that you didn’t know before? Save this for after!

Pueblo: Southwest Inuit: Arctic Regions Iroqouis: Eastern Woodlands

4 Lakota Facts Great Plains region
Original homeland was in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North & South Dakota 13 subdivisions Each is autonomous

5 What Did They Wear? Women wore deerskin or elksin dresses
Men wore breech cloths with leggings Buffalo-hide robes in bad weather

6 Men’s Roles Hunters Warriors Feeding & defending the tribe Chiefs

7 Women’s Roles Houses belonged to them women
Were in charge of the house Took care of the children, cooking, cleaning, and moving

8 Transportation By foot Took their teepees with them
Used dogs to pull a sled Expert travelers and used horses

9 Kawkiutl Facts KWAH-KEE-OO-TL Pacific North West
Now most speak English, Elders may speak Kwak’wala Known for their basket weaving Many Northwest tribes fought with eachother frequently

10 What Did They Wear? Men usually wore nothing!
Women wore skirts made of cedar bark Moccasins and tunics in the winter Special tribal paints, headdresses, leggings and tunics for special occasions

11 Men’s Roles Fishermen, hunters, and warriors Builders
Chiefs or head of clans

12 Women’s Roles Gatherers Cooks Took care of the children
Could be the heads of clans as well!

13 Transportation dug out canoes from cedar trees
War canoes were 60 feet long! Used for hunting and fishing up and down the river

14 Pueblo Facts “town” or “village” in Spanish Southwest deserts
Many large groups did not have a written language Built clay houses

15 What Did They Wear? Men wore breechcloths or short kilts
Women wore mantas Deer skin moccasins on their feet Dress style was changed with the arrival of the Europenas

16 Men’s Roles Warriors Hunters In charge of politics and agriculture

17 Women’s Roles Weave baskets and pottery Storytelling
In charge of the home Had to teach and pass on the Pueblo Religion

18 Transportation Did not move around much Walked
Used horses once Europeans came
