Continued Cellular Respiration
2
Warm Up Why do athletes ride bicycles after a big game or during a match? Why after a sprint are athletes breathing really heavily? Discuss with your tablemates be ready to share out?
3
Agenda Part 2 of Cellular Respiration
Anaerobic Respiration Homework: Chapter 9, Sections 9.2, 9.3, 9.4 (pages ) How is energy transferred and transformed in each stage of cellular respiration? What is the role of the ETC?
4
Aerobic vs Anaerobic
5
Cellular Respiration The Basic Equation
6
Anaerobic Respiration
When would this pathway occur? What are the two types of anaerobic pathways? Lactic Acid Alcohol Fermentation No mitochondria available, no oxygen available, the final receptor of O2 is not there so the H+ need a place to go NAD+ NADH (reduced)
7
Facultative Anaerobes
Glucose Glycolysis CYTOSOL Pyruvate O2 present: Aerobic cellular respiration No O2 present: Fermentation MITOCHONDRION (if present) Ethanol or lactate Acetyl CoA Citric acid cycle

Video
9
Lactic Acid Glycolysis Lactate accepts the H+.
Occurs in animals (cramps, bursts of activities) and bacteria (milkyogart)
10
Alcohol Fermentation Yeast
Builds up ethanol until is poisons the yeast and they die CO2 bubbles Middle step (acetaldehyde 2 Carbon Molecule)
11
Anaerobic Respiration Activity
This lab will determine when your body begins to use anaerobic respiration instead of aerobic respiration.
12
Background Skeletal muscles move in the bones in the skeleton, When the muscles contract, it makes the joints able to move and lets us engage in physical activity of all kinds Chemical energy is needed to cause muscles to contract. The chemical energy is a result of respiration
13
Slow v Fast Twitch Muscles
We have about 50% FT and 50% ST muscles Elite athletes have a different amounts of FT and ST, depending on their sport. FT use energy very quickly. Used for short but intense activity ST don’t get tired very quickly Low to moderate intensity activities
14
Lab Work in pairs Squeezer and Timer Record data in packet then add to class data (website) Graph Answer questions
