Statement of Objectives
Today we are going to examine and understand how power and control in a relationship can lead to aggression and violence

Review: Healthy vs. Unhealthy
I am going to read several relationship characteristics. You will each get a red and green slip. If you think what I read is healthy, hold up GREEN If you think what I read is unhealthy, hold up RED

Focus Activity Find a partner Decide who will be A and who will be B
Partner A is going to be the puppet first and Partner B will begin as the puppeteer Imagine that there is an invisible string that connects from the center of partner B’s left palm to the center of partner A’s forehead The string is approximately 6 inches Do you understand the directions so far?

Focus Activity con’t. Rules -Participation is encouraged. If at any point, you feel uncomfortable, you may pass. -Be aware of personal space and respect personal space of others -You are not allowed to talk -Take care of your own needs- participate to the extent you are able to…injuries ect.

Understand the rules? Review the activity then lets begin!
Reminders: -Partner B’s palm should match Partner A’s forehead. -Partner B should lead partner A around the room exploring all dimensions- both high and low

Power How did it feel to have power in the first activity?
How did this activity relate to power and control in relationships?

1 in 3 teenagers have experienced violence in a dating relationship
If the characteristics of an unhealthy relationship are easy to recognize, then why is it that one third of teenagers have experienced violence in a dating relationship? How do you think power is established in a relationship? How do you think a person would feel being in an unhealthy relationship?

Read to understand what one can do to help themselves or other victims of violence. Highlight the important parts of the article

Get Help Get help immediately
Talk to someone you trust- parent, guardian, teacher If you choose to tell, know that some are mandated reporters. This means they are legally required to report neglect or abuse to someone else, like the police or child protective services. Mandated reporters: teachers, counselors, doctors, social workers, coaches

Help yourself When going out, think: -Where can you go for help? -Who can you call? -Who will help you? -How will you escape a violent situation? Always let friends or family members know where you are going. Include when you’ll be back Call 911 in case of an emergency Memorize important phone numbers

Help someone else Tell the person you are worried Be a good listener
Offer your support Ask how you can help Encourage your friend to seek help

Independent Practice: Alternatives to Power and Control
For each example of power and control in relationships, use what you have learned this lesson and in this unit to write an action or alternative action that would be a more healthy behavior than trying to control their boyfriend/girlfriend.
