6 Why Trade? Countries engage in international trade for two basic reasons: They are different from each other in terms of climate, land, capital, labor, and technology.

7 Trading Scenario On Valentine’s Day the U.S. demand for roses is about 10 million roses. Growing roses in the U.S. in the winter is difficult. Heated greenhouses should be used. The costs for energy, capital, and labor are substantial. Resources for the production of roses could be used to produce other goods, say computers.

8 Trading Scenario Suppose that in the U.S. 10 million roses can be produced with the same resources as 100,000 computers. Suppose also that in Mexico 10 million roses can be produced with the same resources as 30,000 computers. Who should produce what? Should they trade?

9 Comparative Advantage
Millions of roses Thousands of computers United States ,000 South America ,000 ,000 Both countries benefit by giving up the lower opportunity cost.

10 Comparative Advantage
A country has a comparative advantage at producing something if they can produce it at lower cost than anyone else. Having a comparative advantage is not the same as being the best at something. In fact, someone can be completely unskilled at doing something, yet still have a comparative advantage at doing it! How can that happen?

11 Viewing the World Point of view perspective An individual’s opinion about a matter, based on his or her personal experience. A people’s worldview; one that has developed from collective experience.

12 Globalization The process that is making the world’s citizens increasingly interdependent economically, socially, politically, environmentally, and technologically.

13 Globalization The process by which people are becoming more connected to each other and dependent on one another. As humankind has evolved, this connection and interdependence has also evolved.

14 Global connections have impacted many countries in…
Technology (mobility, doing things better) Knowledge (spread of ideas, science) Culture (beliefs, customs, art, music) Communication (media, language) Environment (changing climate, resources) Commerce and Trade (business, agriculture, finance)

15 Three Main Types 1) ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION
The process of expanding the world’s trading markets 2) SOCIAL GLOBALIZATION The process by which peoples’ lifestyles spread over global networks 3) POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION The process by which political decisions are becoming more international

16 Social Globalization Do you ever listen to music created by international artists or watch television shows made in other countries? Do you choose the clothes you wear based on what you see in the global media?

17 Political Globalization
Are your political representatives ever influenced by international pressure or the treaties that they sign? Do they ever respond to global events by providing disaster relief?

18 Economic Globalization
Do you buy items that originate in other countries? Do you know anyone who works for a business that has expanded its operations into other countries?

19 ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION
For almost as long as people have lived in communities, they have taken part in long-distance trade. Today, international trade networks extend across the planet. Where is your clothing made? Where is the produce your purchase at your local grocery store from? Globalization has created the international economy that makes these products available to you.

20 Multinational Corporation
A multinational corporation is a corporaton that manages production or delivers services in more than one country.

21 Multinational Corporation
Wal-Mart, Home Depot, McDonald’s, Nike WHY? Expansion into new markets is driven by the desire for profit By operating on a larger scale, they can make more money

22 Video Clip You tube : Michael Moore and Phil Knight

23 Looking from different perspectives….

24 Multi-National Companies
What do you think are some criticisms of multi-national companies?

25 Debating Teams: Divide class into six debate teams.
Assign one role to each team (Handout one Globalization Role Sheet). Give each team class time to develop their argument, consider the counter-arguments, and their defense. Invite two teams up to debate. (Team 1 & 2, Team 3 & 4, or Team 5 & 6) Each team has 5-10 minutes to introduce their argument. Then, 3-5 minutes for a rebuttal. And, 3-5 minutes for a closing argument incorporating a proposed solution to satisfy the conflicting wants/needs.

26 Non-Debating Teams: After the debate, the class will be allowed to ask the teams questions. They may also make their own observations and their own argument for one position or another. Each observing student will complete the Peer-Led Assessment Tool for evaluation. The class will vote for which solution they think would be best to resolve the problem. Both teams will explain to the class how they felt in playing their roles and the outcome of the vote.

27 Exit Slip / Class Reflection Questions:
What connection do we as Americans have to how developing countries can or cannot control their pollution? What responsibility do you have, as a consumer in America, to global pollution? What changes can you make in your buying – of shoes, clothes, food – or habits? Most of the young factory workers serving as cheap labor are young women. Why do you think that is?

28 Perspectives on Economic Globalization
Individually, you will be assigned to read 1 of 4 articles Practice active reading skills: Annotate the text Highlight/underline/write in margins Take notes on a separate piece of paper Share with a partner who has read a different article. Create a PRO/CON T-CHART of globalization based on your findings.

29 Exit Slip: Why do you think that some people benefit from outsourcing and other do not?

30 Exit Slip In a paragraph, give 2 pros and 2cons to globalization. Make sure to use details. Does globalization promote equality across the world, why or why not?
