Scientific Notation: an easier way for people to write very large or very small numbers.
The different ways to calculate scientific notation is through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Sometimes, you may have to move the decimal and change the exponent accordingly.
3
Put in Scientific Notation
Step 1: Write the number without the place-holding zeros. Step 2: Place the decimal point after the first digit. Step 3: Find the exponent, by counting the number of places that you moved the decimal point. Step 4: Write out the number.
4
Example 653,000,000 6.53 The decimal point as moved eight places to the left The exponent of 10 is positive 8. 6.53 x 108 *Moving the decimal to the right would make the exponent negative*
5
Take out Scientific Notation
Step 1: Decide if you will be moving the decimal point to the left or to the right. Step 2:Write down how many places you would need to move the decimal Step 3: Move the decimal point over, adding zeroes for every empty space. Step 4: Write the new decimal point after you've moved over the correct amount of spaces.
6
Example 4.205 x 10-6 Move decimal to the left 6 places 000004205
