5 RULES FOR COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES.
10
1. THE MAJORITY OF ADJECTIVES.
We add –er to the majority of adjectives. We use the word “than” when comparing. Some adjectives in this category: fast, cheap, nice, old, young, etc.
11
e.g. A Swatch is cheaper than a Rolex.
12
2. Two-syllable adjectives ending in the consonant “Y”
We change the final “Y” by “i” and add –er. We use the word “than” to compare. Some adjectives: busy, happy, lazy, etc.
13
El Cacique is busier than Parque Caracolí.
14
3. Adjectives with two or more syllables (not ending in “Y”)
We add the word “more” before the adjective. We use the word “than” to compare. Some adjectives: dangerous, modern, interesting, comfortable, etc.
15
e.g. English is more interesting than German.
16
4. One-syllable adjectives ending in Consonant-Vowel-Consonant
We double the last consonant. Add –er at the end of the word. We use the word “than” to compare. Some adjectives: hot, thin, slim, big
17
e.g. Fashion models in the present are slimmer than models from the past.
18
Exceptions New Newer Few Fewer There are a couple more
19
5. Irregular Adjectives They change completely.
They need the word “than” for the comparison.
