This chart represents the change in the Lexile measure only. See how the Lexile measures were stretched at all grade levels. Remember that the quantitative measure of text complexity is only one of three factors to consider in determining text complexity, yet breaking it down to numbers makes it easier to see the increase in demands. Master Teacher: Tell participants that this chart represents information contained in the Supplemental Information for Appendix A of the CCSS. Ask them what they notice about the change in Lexile measures as recommended for each of the grade level bands. Tell them by looking at just the numbers helps to bring out the point that the expectations have been raised at all grade levels. Click to the next slide which will make this fact even clearer because reading grade levels are easier to understand.

Take your time and read the passage and “question” carefully. You may want to read the question(s) BEFORE the passage. Think about the passage and use your reading skills to decide on the BEST answer. Use your “SKIPS” when necessary and avoid merely guessing. Make an educated guess if all else fails. Show me your score on the computer screen. DO NOT EXIT the program until I tell you to do so.

12 Raise your hand and show me your score on the screen.
