The Importance of compartments
Introduction to cells!
2
Do Now 11/17/14 Scenario: Design the ideal city to survive a zombie apocalypse. Quickly describe or draw what your ideal city would include.
3
Combine your ideas with your team mates and create an ideal city as a group on the isle paper (20min) 1. Does your city have a form of government? 2. Do your citizens have a form of transportation to get around? 3. Is anyone allowed to enter your city? 4. Do your citizens have a way of getting food? 5. What type of currency does your town have? 6. What is your city known for? (Ex. fishing, technology, farming, etc. )
4
Pick a person in your group to present your city to your class

Presentation questions
1. Does your city have a form of government? 2. Do your citizens have a form of transportation to get around? 3. Is anyone allowed to enter your city? 4. Do your citizens have a way of getting food? 5. What type of currency does your town have? 6. What is your city known for? (Ex. fishing, technology, farming, etc. )

DO Now: What is a cell? A cell is the smallest unit of life!
They are composed of many different compartments. Each compartment has their own task to complete to keep the cell alive
7
A cell is just like a city!
Cells have their own version of the white house, president, security, banks, energy plant, transportation etc.
8
There are two type of cells
Eukaryotic cells= Animal cells and Plant cells Prokaryotic cells= Bacteria cells
9
Eukaryotic cells= Eukaryotes
Are more complex cells They have membrane- enclosed nucleus and organelles We are made of Eukaryotic cells
10
Draw the following
11
Draw the prokaryotic cell
12
Prokaryotic Cell= Bacteria
Does not have a nucleus so DNA is just floating around. Has ribosomes (to make protein), cell membrane, and a cell wall.
14
Why is the cell membrane not a solid barrier?
15
Do Now 11/21/14 2. Permeable(everything can get through:
Make up your own analogy for the following words: Ex. Selectively permeable: Security guard 1. Impermeable (nothing can get through): 2. Permeable(everything can get through: 3. Selectively permeable ( only certain things can enter and leave:
16
Cell membrane =gate Cell membranes are selectively permeable.
Selectively permeable= Only certain substance can enter Cell membranes are very similar to a security guard they only let certain substances inside the cell.

Work sheet Answer the following
Table 1- Mass after 24 hours Table 2- Describe the eggs in full detail, color, smell, size, etc. Analysis Questions 1,2,3,5,6
18
Do Now 11/19/14 1. What do you think will occur to a shell- less egg in distilled water? 2. What do you think will occur to a shell- less egg in corn syrup?
19
Egg Experiment page 152 I have removed the shell of the eggs by leaving the eggs in acetic acid (vinegar). The vinegar reacts calcium in the hard shell and dissolves it.
20
Lab Materials 2 cups 2 labels 2 shell-less eggs One pair of Gloves
21
Lab Procedure 1.Label one cup water and write one group members name
2. Label the other cup corn syrup and write a group members name 3. Write down your observations on the worksheet 4. Weigh both cups with the egg inside 5. Subtract 5.2 grams to the weight of the egg. (since the cup weighs 5.2g) 6. 7. GENTLY add enough water to cover the egg. 8. GENTLY add enough corn syrup to cover the egg.
