2 Women at the beginning of the 20th century, before they had the vote:
Most married women did not work outside the home. Many single women did work outside the home, in mills and factories, but many left their jobs once they married. Most married women relied on their husband's income. Regardless of whether she was married, no woman had a direct way of affecting her government.

11 This 1869 lithograph by Currier and Ives is a satire that depicts a male illustrator's nightmare about the triumph of feminism. Women with names like "Miss Hangman" and "Susan Sharptongue" smoke cigars, vote in elections, run for public office, abandon childcare, and generally take over society from men.
