Integers Unit 3
2
So here’s the problem…….
Problem: The highest elevation in North America is Mt. McKinley, which is 20,320 feet above sea level. The lowest elevation is Death Valley, which is 282 feet below sea level. What is the distance from the top of Mt. McKinley to the bottom of Death Valley?
3
Integers are the set of positive and negative whole numbers along with 0.
The number line is used to represent integers. Opposites are two numbers that are the same distance from 0 on a number line but in opposite directions.
4
What are some more examples of opposites?
Top Increase Forward Positive What are the opposite of…… 3 _____________ -10 ____________ 0 ____________ 120 ____________
5
The integer zero is neutral. It is neither positive nor negative.
Whole numbers greater than zero are called positive integers. These numbers are to the right of zero on the number line. Whole numbers less than zero are called negative integers. These numbers are to the left of zero on the number line. The integer zero is neutral. It is neither positive nor negative.
6
The sign of an integer is either positive (+) or negative (-), except zero, which has no sign.
Two integers are opposites if they are each the same distance away from zero, but on opposite sides of the number line. One will have a positive sign, the other a negative sign. In the number line above, +3 and -3 are labeled as opposites.

Going back to the problem……
Problem: The highest elevation in North America is Mt. McKinley, which is 20,320 feet above sea level. The lowest elevation is Death Valley, which is 282 feet below sea level. What is the distance from the top of Mt. McKinley to the bottom of Death Valley? Solution: The distance from the top of Mt. McKinley to sea level is 20,320 feet and the distance from sea level to the bottom of Death Valley is 282 feet. The total distance is the sum of 20,320 and 282, which is 20,602 feet.
9
More about opposites, comparing and ordering integers
10
Consider the following………
The opposite of a number’s opposite is the number itself.
11
A “-” sign means the opposite of a number. Let’s explore……
What’s the opposite of 6? What‘s the opposite of this number?
12
1= ___________ - (7)=_________ -(- 3)=_________ -(-(- 2))=________
1= ___________ - (7)=_________ -(- 3)=_________ -(-(- 2))=________ Examples: Raise your hand to help complete the following problems: REMEMBER: A “-” SIGN MEANS THE OPPOSITE OF A NUMBER.
13
You can compare and order integers by graphing on a number line or using >, <, =.
Order each set of numbers in order from greatest to least. +1, -5, -1 Step 1: Draw a number line Step 2: Graph the numbers Step 3: Write them in order from greatest to least (right to left)
