Biomes Biomes are regions in the world that share similar plant structures, plant spacing, animals, climate and weather. Biomes are classified as either terrestrial (land) or aquatic (water).

Tundra Description: Very cold, low diversity, and simple vegetation
Temperature: -20°F - 50°F Rainfall: 6in-10in annually Plants: arctic moss, arctic willow, bearberry Animals: arctic fox, caribou, polar bear

Taiga Description: The largest terrestrial biome, soil is nutrient poor and acidic Temperature: -65°F - 70°F Rainfall: 12 in-33 in annually Plants: Balsam fur, black spruce, eastern red cedar Animals: woodpeckers, black bears, and wolverines

Deciduous Forest Description: Temperature varies, soil is rich with decayed matter Temperature: -28°F - 70°F Rainfall: 32 in annually Plants: American Beech, Carpet Moss, pecan tree Animals: Coyote, duck bill platypus, eastern chipmunk

Grasslands Description: Two types of grasslands, and are dominated by grass, also called prairie Temperature: 20°F - 70°F Rainfall: 10 in - 30 in annually Plants: Big bluestem grass, buffalo grass, milkweed Animals: Bumble bee, bobcat, swift fox

Savanna Description: A savanna is a rolling grassland scattered with shrubs and isolated trees Temperature: 68°F - 78°F Rainfall: 10 in – 30 in annually Plants: Kangaroo paw, elephant grass, baobab Animals: kola bear, black mamba, lion

Desert Description: Animals are small and nocturnal, low vegetation, plants conserve water Temperature: More than 64°F Rainfall: 1 in annually Plants: Barrel cactus, Joshua tree, Pancake prickly pear cactus Animals: Bobcat, Kangaroo Rat, Armadillo lizard

Marine Biome Description: Consists of oceans, coral reefs, and estuaries Temperature: N/A Rainfall: Over half of the rain that falls in the world falls here Plants: Algae, kelp, seaweed Animals: blue whale, sea otter, fish

Tropical Rainforest Description: Highly diverse species, soil is nutrient-poor and acidic Temperature: Average 80°F Rainfall: 50 in – 260 in annually Plants: Bengal Bamboo, coconut tree, curare Animals: Bengal tiger, chimpanzee, king cobra

Temperate Rainforest Description: Simple biome where most animals are herbivores Temperature: 14°F - 52°F Rainfall: 14in-30 in annually Plants: Fir tree, pine tree, spruce Animals: red fox, moose, snowshoe rabbit

Biome Project Pick one of the 8 biomes in the text book
Create a Food Web representing the organism in your biome Label each organism as Producer, 1st level consumer, 2nd level consumer, (if present) and Decomposer (if present) Create an imaginary animal that could survive in your biome and describe the adaptations it has to survive.

ENGAGE Listen to the sounds in the El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico. This is the only rainforest in the U.S. and its territories.
