Warm-up Write everything that you think you know about frogs
2
Warm up Write down two adaptations that frogs have so they can live in the water and on land

FROG ANIMALIA CHORDATA VERTEBRATA “backbone” AMPHIBIA “double life”
KINGDOM _____________ PHYLUM ____________________________ SUBPHYLUM ___________________________ CLASS _______________________________ ORDER _____________________________ ANIMALIA CHORDATA VERTEBRATA “backbone” AMPHIBIA “double life” ANURA “without a tail”
5
AMPHIBIAN CHARACTERISTICS
Moist, thin skin without scales External Nares or nostrils Nictitating Membrane, a 3rd eyelid - This covers the eyes when the frog is under water. Aquatic (water based) larva changes to terrestrial (land based) adult Feet without claws Respiration with gills, lungs, skin, mouth Ectothermic (cold blooded)
6
Thin, moist skin – no scales Mucous glands make it “slimy”
Camouflage- for protection Some have poison glands

LUNGS: GAS EXCHANGE
8
BREATHING WITH LUNGS is called PULMONARY (LUNG) RESPIRATION
BREATHING WITH LUNGS is called PULMONARY (LUNG) RESPIRATION
9
BREATHING THROUGH SKIN is called CUTANEOUS (SKIN) RESPIRATION
BREATHING THROUGH SKIN is called CUTANEOUS (SKIN) RESPIRATION
10
ECTOTHERMIC “cold blooded”
Body temperature is dependent on surrounding environment

SMALL INTESTINE DUODENUM Receives trypsin and bile; finishes digestion
ILEUM Absorbs nutrients VILLI Increase surface area
21
LARGE INTESTINE Removes water from digestive waste; concentrates feces
LARGE INTESTINE Removes water from digestive waste; concentrates feces
22
KIDNEYS- Remove nitrogen waste from blood and dilute it with water to make urine; osmoregulation

URINARY BLADDER STORES URINE MADE BY KIDNEYS LARVAE (Tadpoles)
Excrete AMMONIA like fish Adult frogs excrete UREA to conserve water

STEPS TO DISSECT PLACE FROG ON BACK AND SECURE WITH PINS
USE SCISSORS TO MAKE A CUT THROUGH THE SKIN DOWN THE CENTER MAKE CROSS CUTS BY THE ARMS AND LEGS AND PIN SKIN DOWN
26
Place the pins
27
Using scissors, cut the layer of skin down the center of the frog
28
Cut the skin above the legs and arms. Pin the skin back.
29
Cut the muscle down the center
30
Peel back the muscle and pin it down
31
Pull back the lungs to expose the heart
32
Eggs- female
