2. Introduction...What are themes?
What is a theme?
“A unifying or dominant idea”
Ex: an outer space themed restaurant
Throughout our units, we have discussed topics that cover many themes. Before leaving the sixth grade, you must be able to identify these themes.

3. Theme: Social Hierarchy
A division of classes based on wealth or property ownership.
What are some examples of Social Hierarchy from our units?
Caste System, Feudalism, etc.

4. Theme: Economic Systems/Economy
The management of the resources of a community or country. (i.e: managing money or the system set up for making and exchanging goods)
What are some examples of economic systems from our units?

5. Theme: Political Systems
A system of politics and government. Usually compared to the legal system, economic system, cultural system, or other social systems.
What are some examples of existing political systems from our units?

6. Theme: Technology
Dealing with the creation and use of technical things and how they relate to every day life, society, and the environment.
What are some examples of technology from our units? (not just computers!)

7. Theme: Contribution
The act of contributing something (sharing something) for the benefit or detriment of a society.
What are some contributions past civilizations have left us from our units?

8. Theme: Expansion
The act or process of expanding; the amount one has expanded (a society expanding, a government expanding, etc.)
What are some examples of expansion from our units?

9. Theme: Conflict
To come into a disagreement or opposition; to disagree with someone.
What are some examples of conflict from our units? They could be government conflicts, personal conflicts, etc.

10. Theme: Migration The process or act of moving or relocating.
What are some examples of migration from our units?

11. Theme: Geographic Features
Natural landmarks such as mountains, rivers, beaches, and animal and plant life of a place.
What are some examples of major geographic features from our units?

12. Theme: Cultural Diffusion
The spreading of ideas, customs, beliefs, and other cultural elements from one group to another.
What are some examples of cultural diffusion (ideas from other areas spreading) from our units?
