1 Day 72 Metallic Bonding

2 Warm Up What force holds two ions together in an ionic bond?

3 Agenda (Covalent bonds) Metallic Bonds Visual Analogies

4 Learning Target Part 3 I can describe what creates an attraction between two atoms in an covalent bond Part 4 I can describe what type of elements form metallic bonds I can describe what happens to valence electrons when metallic bonds are formed between atoms I can describe what creates an attraction between atoms in a metallic

5 Turn to your covalent bonding notes
I can describe what creates an attraction between two atoms in an covalent bond

6 How covalent bonds form
Since the positive nucleus of each atom are attracted to the SAME pair of negative electrons a bond is formed between the atoms Have 2 students get up and then have one hold something (modeling it)

7 Set up Cornell Notes Title: Metallic Bonds

8 Metallic Bonding Is the attraction between atoms of the same metals
Energy levels of the atoms overlap This allows free movement of electrons through the metal This is called the “sea of electrons” Attraction between electrons and different positively charged nuclei hold the metal together Draw diagram on the board to show how energy levels overlap like a venn diagram and how the electrons freely move between the atoms because of their attraction to the + nucleus Analogy: plate of honey (sea of electrons) and flies stuck to it (+ nucleus)

9 Animation Metallic Bonding

10 Visual Analogy Your goal is to create a visual analogy to demonstrate the similarities and differences the three types of bonds have Analogies must include: What happens to the valence electrons for each type of bond Illustrate the attraction when the bond is form for each type Include a caption describing your analogy

11 Example The bone between the dogs represents the valence electrons. Since this is a covalent bond, each dog is sharing their valence electrons with one another. The attraction for this bond is formed between the positive nucleus of the atom and the same pair of shared electrons.

12 Supplies you need Draw a subject from Ms. Crock
Pictures from Ms. Crock Box of markers Piece of chart paper Scissors Glue Timer!

13 Visual Analogy: You have 33 minutes to complete this activity (set your timer!)
Analogies must include: What happens to the valence electrons for each type of bond Illustrate the attraction when the bond is form for each type Include a caption describing your analogy

14 Share out Each table group has 2 minutes to share out
