Road Map to Success: The New Imperialism World History II
“It is the destiny of the weak to be devoured by the strong.” -Otto von Bismarck In the late 19th century, European nations realized that their advanced technology brought about by the Industrial Revolution gave them an economic and militaristic advantage over the rest of the world. Not only could the Europeans travel farther and faster, but they also used new technology to make better weaponry. Because of this, the nations of Europe (and the United States) began to stake their claim throughout the rest of the world. The imperialists found justification for their actions through the scientific theories composed by Charles Darwin. Darwin proved that animals evolve over time and the weaker animals perish if they do not adapt. Imperialists adapted Darwin’s theories of evolution (natural selection/survival of the fittest) to everyday life. The imperialists soon found themselves in competition with each other for world supremacy and eventually ‘survival of the fittest’ spiraled out of control and led to the world’s First World War. You will master the following learning standards: WHII.11 Describe the causes of 19th century European Imperialism. WHII.12 – WHII.16 Identify major developments in Indian, African, Japanese, Chinese and Latin American history in the 19th and 20th centuries.
