1 What are text structures?
Refers to how the information within a written text is organized. This strategy helps you understand that a text might present a main idea and details; a cause and then its effects; and/or different views of a topic. By understanding these text structures you will be better able to understand the author’s purpose, pov, and central idea. Navigate through the next few slides to learn about the 5 different text structures. Understanding these text structures will assist you with the assignment(s) you must complete at the end of the PowerPoint.

3 The author discusses similarities and differences between people, things, concepts, or ideas
Clues: Likenesses and differences are discussed; also, both, in contrast, etc. Compare/Contrast

4 The author provides readers with chronological events or a list of steps in a procedure
Clues: Events in order of occurrence, instructions given step-by-step, order words: first, next, etc. Order & Sequence

5 The author gives information about a problem and explains one or more solutions
Clues: A problem is solved or needs solving, problem, solution, solve Problem & Solution

6 The author describes an event or several events (cause) and the events that follow (effect)
Clues: Cause, because, effect, as a result of, due to, reason Cause & Effect

7 Instructions You will read 5 paragraphs.
Based on your reading of the paragraph you MUST decide which text structure is being used. For each paragraph you must, draw the graph associated with that text structure and fill it in with the appropriate information. This needs to be turned in on Monday 9/21

13 Short Response Please answer the following questions in complete sentences. Your response should be a minimum of 5 sentences, completely answer the questions, and must provide elaboration. Use evidence in your response for support if necessary. Questions: (1) How does the text's structure help the reader identify and understand the text's key ideas and details? (2) Can text structure influence the writer's purpose and/or point of view? How?
