2 VCE Revolutions Date: 14/05/2019 Homework Task Week 5
Revolutions Unit 3 AOS 1 Homework Task Week 5  Analyse the following source: The Third Estate wishes to have real representatives in the Estates General, that is to say, deputies drawn from its order, who are competent to be interpreters of its will and defenders of its interest. But what will it avail to be present at the Estates General if the predominating interest there is contrary to its own! Its presence would only consecrate the oppression of which it would be the eternal victim. Thus, it is indeed certain that it cannot come to vote at the Estates General unless it is to have in that body an influence at least equal to that of the privileged classes; and it demands a number of representatives equal to that of the first two orders together. Finally, this equality of representation would become completely illusionary if every chamber voted separately. The Third Estate demands, then, that votes be taken by head and not by order. Emmanuel Joseph (Abbé) Sieyès, ‘What is the Third Estate?’ in JA Stewart, A Documentary Survey of the French Revolution, Macmillan, New York, 1951, pp     What two changes to voting procedure does Sieyès suggest in this document? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________(2 marks) What does Sieyès mean when he refers to the Third Estate as the ‘eternal victim?’ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ (2 marks) Caption: ‘We ‘ave for to hope that this ain’t goin’ to last forever’ Date: May 1789
