7 Virginia (1607) Founded by John Smith & The Virginia Company of London
Purpose: For Trading and goods (gold)

8 Massachusetts (1620) John Winthrop
Colonial governor and leader when colony was founded Mostly “Puritans” Help to establish the New England Way (opposite of separation of church and state)

9 Massachusetts Sought religious freedom from England, had been treated poorly Established by Puritans who wanted to reform the Church of England, get rid of Catholic influence, and set up a role model colony in America Annexed area that is now Maine Strictly religious…strict punishment

11 New York (1626) Was originally a Dutch colony called New Amsterdam
Included Manhattan Island which was bought from the Native Americans for $24! Renamed New York after the land was given from King Charles II to his brother, the Duke of York, who later became King himself

12 Maryland (1633) Founder: George Calvert, “Lord Baltimore”
Was to be a refuge for Roman Catholics Named for Henrietta Maria Catholic Wife of Charles I

13 Rhode Island (1636) Roger Williams
Thought there should be a separation between church and state He and his followers were banished from Massachusetts

14 Rhode Island Founded to give people a place where they could have true religious freedom

15 Connecticut (1636) Founded because a large group of people had religious differences with the Puritan religion Many also wanted more farmland

16 Connecticut Thomas Hooker led the founding of the colony
Influential in creating and the adoption of the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut…first written plan of gov’t in the colonies (Mayflower Compact was a “governing document”)

17 Delaware (1638) Originally settled by the Dutch and Swedish
Once considered part of Pennsylvania… until the American Revolution

18 New Hampshire (1638) Founded by John Wheelwright who had been expelled for criticizing Puritan teachings

19 The Carolinas (N:1653, S:1663) Charles II wanted a colony between Virginia and Florida for protection against Spanish Gave land to some of his supporters to establish that colony NC was mostly small farmers SC was mostly rice plantations Charleston = Charles Town

20 New Jersey (1664) Offered religious freedom
Originally owned by Duke of York, given to Lord Berkley

21 Pennsylvania (1682) Charles II repaid a debt by granting land to the Penn family Founder: William Penn also “owned” Delaware Mostly Quaker

22 Pennsylvania Was a Quaker haven Poor immigrants settled there as well

23 Georgia (1732) Social experiment by James Oglethorpe
Was to be a place for poor to get a new start. Refuge for those in debt instead of prison Buffer between Spanish Florida and Carolinas Initially didn’t allow slavery

24 French Claims Quebec: Fur trading New Orleans : Port for trading

25 French Claims Founded New Orleans and used it as a trading port
Built forts along the MS River

26 French Claims Settlement in Quebec & other parts of Canada
Settlers mostly fur traders. Given to British after French and Indian War was lost Why people still speak French there today
