1 Bellringer March 2 Take out your copy of “A Call For Unity”
Go to the last paragraph on the first page. What do the clergymen say in this paragraph which doesn’t match the information we saw in the video about how the police responded to the protests? Circle the information.

2 Finishing “A Call for Unity”
Answer the five questions on a SEPARATE PIECE OF PAPER which you will hand in. You have 10 minutes to work. If you finish early, raise your hand and we will review your answers. Be prepared to revise. Period 2 only. Period 4 is finished – just call for any missing questions.

3 Reading “A Letter from Birmingham Jail”
You and your partner will read the text together. Read it out loud. Stop and answer the questions as you come across them. Answer the questions BASED ON WHAT THE TEXT SAYS. Do not copy off each other.

4 Reading Goals Use reading guide to help analyze King’s approach.
Evaluate his use of ethos, logos, and pathos to see if his piece is more persuasive or argumentative. Take a quiz to check your understanding of the text. Prepare to answer the question: How does MLK employ ethos, logos, and pathos in “A Letter From Birmingham Jail” to construct his argument? Here’s another LONGER video which incorporates both “A Call for Unity” and “Letter from Birmingham Jail” if you need some help at home: Univerity of Texas at Austin's video Here is a color coded version of the text identifying ethos, logos, pathos, and counterarguments. From Milikin University: Click here

5 After Reading Discussion:
How does King create his ethos for his intended audience? Why can he not rely on his credentials and leadership roles? How does King create a logical argument throughout his response? How does King use pathos effectively? (not too much, not too little) Use Socratic seminar for discussion.

6 Take the quiz. You’ll do fine. You don’t need the text.

7 Exit Ticket Why is King NOT an outsider in Birmingham even though he is from a totally different state?
