Speech Writing Edition 1
2
What is this for? (Pt.1) Primary Speakers List
(To be explained in further detail when we go over ROP!) You will need to stand up and state why this issue is so crucial to discuss and what direction you believe the committee’s discussion needs to go! This is your first impression for the rest of the committee! Use your position paper: Appeal to emotion paragraph -- Intro -- to show the committee how deeply invested your country is invested in solving the issue! More passion means more inspiring other countries to follow your lead! Call to action paragraph -- Potential Solutions -- to figure out what you want everyone to discuss Get to the point -- you’ve made your grandiose fluff talk, now don’t shy away from specifics! Show the committee you’re serious about getting to work by stating a couple points of discussion! What is this for? (Pt.1)

Structure Hook Appeal to Emotion Call to Action OR Past Solutions
OR … etc! Mix it up! Switch up the order to what sounds right to you! No one wants to hear the same speech again and again. Also remember you only have 1 minute! Preparing your speech -- at least a rough structure -- ensures that every word counts!

Example Speech (Issue: Peanut Butter vs. Nutella)
Hook:The issue of Peanut Butter vs. Nutella has plagued countless middle schoolers in the sandwich spreads aisles across the entire world. We must come together as the United Nations Sandwich Spreads Council to settle this conflict once and for all. Should we buy Peanut Butter or Nutella? Appeal to Emotion: Many parents will argue for peanut butter and methods have been employed in the past to manipulate these indecisive children into choosing the sometimes healthier spread. We must come together to make a comprehensive decision as a globe on whether or not these kids should choose peanut butter and nutella, if not for them, for the parents -- who are exhausted from waiting in those aisles day in/day out, hoping their kid will finally just make a choice! Call to Action: Now, the delegate of __ would like to see debate around pricing and flavour, so the children may finally understand that Nutella is indeed the right choice.

Structure Recap Goal Setting
You can throw in an appeal to emotion here. This speech isn’t scripted, so usually it’s a couple of scribbles on notepad paper in the form of bullet points which you elaborate on when you stand up. Keep an eye on the timer and get through all your points without rushing. You want to maintain your composure so you communicate better!
