When you’re ready, take the final test! Plants Climate Animals Conservation Glossary Teachers Main Menu I’m ready…TAKE THE FINAL TEST!

4 Glossary Altitudes: the height of an object
Beef: the parts of cows used as food Cattle ranching: having an area of land used for cattle to eat and live on Camouflage: special patterns that make things hard to find Characteristic: a special feature of something Charcoal: a black solid that is made from matter over thousands of years Main Menu Next Page

5 Glossary continued Chicle: the milky, chewy sap of the Sapodilla tree
Climate: the weather conditions in an area over a long period of time Conservation: the act of protecting or preserving something Evaporation: the changing of liquid water on earth to gas in the atmosphere Humid: a high amount of moisture in the air Modern Agricultural Technologies: the different ways that we use technology to alter the food we grow First Page Next Page

6 Glossary continued Nocturnal: active at night Plantations: a large area of land where a certain crop is grown Precipitation: rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground from the sky Sap: the sticky liquid that flows through trees and other plants Temperature: how hot or cold something is Main Menu Previous Page

7 Plants Glossary ACTIVITY
Click on a picture to learn more about that plant! Use the glossary button to look up any words you don’t know. Click the ACTIVITY button to do an activity at the end! Plants Glossary ACTIVITY

8 Coffee Back to Plants Glossary Give us beans for the coffee we drink!
Each “berry” has 2 coffee beans inside! Can grow as high as 30 feet! Takes 6-8 years to grow, but lives for 100 years! Prefer high altitudes for shade with a wet and dry season. Back to Plants Glossary

9 Banana Back to Plants Glossary They reach heights of 10 and 20 feet.
The stems can weigh nearly 100 pounds and are about 93% water! Can be grown in the United States thanks to modern agricultural technologies. Back to Plants Glossary

10 Sapodilla Back to Plants Glossary
Bark contains a white sap called chicle. Grainy yellow fruit that tastes like a pear. Rainforest animals, especially monkeys like Mikey, love this fruit! Back to Plants Glossary

11 Cacao Back to Plants Glossary This is the plant that makes chocolate!
Each pod has 20 to 60 cocoa beans. Grows below altitudes of 1,000 feet in areas that receive 4 inches of rain per month. Back to Plants Glossary

12 Activity! Back to Cacao Back to Coffee Glossary Click here to submit!
Fill in the Venn diagram with phrases from the phrase bank comparing and contrasting the cacao and coffee plants! Cacao Coffee Phrase Bank Makes things that we can buy at the grocery store Prefers altitudes below 1,000 feet Looks like berries Grows as high as 30 feet Prefers high altitudes Lives in places that receives 4 inches of rain per month Is a plant in the rainforest Back to Cacao Back to Coffee Glossary Click here to submit!

13 Does your diagram look like this?
Makes things that you can buy at the store Is a plant in the rainforest Looks like berries Grow as high as 30 feet Prefer high altitudes Prefers altitudes below 1,000 feet Lives in places that receive 4 inches of rain per month Yes, I’m ready to move on! No, but I can fix it!

14 Good job!! You’re one step closer to being an official explorer!! Keep up the good work! Click on me to go back to the main menu!

16 Click here when you’re done!!
Click on the animal that matches each description in the order below. Click here when you’re done!! 1. Use their hands to make and use tools 2. Have stripes as camouflage. 3. Can live up to five years 4. Live in groups of 5 to 6

17 Good job!! You’re right! Great job! You’re even closer to being an Official Rainforest Explorer. Click on me to go to back to the main menu!

18 Climate Activity Glossary
Click the picture on the left to learn about precipitation. Click the picture on the right to learn about temperature. When you think you’re ready, click on the button for the next activity! Activity Glossary

19 Precipitation It rains more that 150 cm a year.
The rainforest gets more than 4 inches of rain a month. In the rainforests, 50% of the rain that falls is from its own evaporation. The air is very humid and sticky Back to Climate Glossary

20 Temperature Rainforests are located on the equator of the earth.
Average temperature 77 degrees Fahrenheit, about the same as a hot summer day Temperature never drops below 67 degrees Fahrenheit. If it were any colder, the plants and animals that live there would be able to survive. Back to Climate Glossary

21 Activity! For this activity, you are going to be given a characteristic of climate and you are going to decide whether it describes the temperature or precipitation and click the button. Click on me to go to the first question!

22 Question 1 Temperature Precipitation
It is never colder than 67 degrees Fahrenheit and normally as warm as a hot summer day. This is a characteristic of…. Precipitation Temperature

23 You’re right! Great job! Click on me to go to the next question!
Good job!! You’re right! Great job! Click on me to go to the next question!

24 Uh oh…. Aw come on! Quit monkeying around! You know this! Think of what you has to do with heat. Click on me to try to question again!

25 Question 2 Temperature Precipitation
In the rainforest, it rains more than 150 cm a year and can rain up to 4 inches per month. This is a characteristic of…. Precipitation Temperature

28 Conservation Activity
Oh no! The rainforest is being torn down! Click on the cow, the fruit, and the logs to figure out why! When you’re done click on the Activity button! Activity Glossary

29 Cattle Ranching Back to Conservation Glossary
The rainforest is being burnt down to make room for cattle ranching. The cattle that is ranched on the land is used to provide beef for us here in America! The land doesn’t last long, and then they have to cut down more! Back to Conservation Glossary

30 Logging Back to Conservation Glossary
The large trees are cut down and sold to other countries to make furniture. Smaller trees are used in the production of charcoal. Huge areas are cleared for logging at one time. Back to Conservation Glossary

31 Agriculture Back to Conservation Glossary
The rainforest is cut down to make plantations to grow fruits to sell to other countries. The soil does not sustain the plants for long, and every few years they have to tear down even more trees to make room for more plantations. Back to Conservation Glossary

32 Activity You just learned about why the rainforest is being destroyed. Can you help me come up with ways to save it? Think of some things you can do to help the rainforest at home and type them in the box! Click on me to submit your great ideas and go back to the main menu!

Objectives Given a phrase bank, students will be able to fill out a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the cacao and coffee plants. Given characteristics of certain rainforest animals, students will be able to match a picture of the animal with its given characteristic. Given a description of a certain climate, students will be able to determine whether it is a factor of precipitation or temperature. Given a list of factors on why the rainforest is being destroyed, students will be able to develop creative ways to help save the rainforest from home. Back to Teacher’s Corner
