Solution: Have lecture and lab classes, just like college
Problem: Classes are too large at BHS Solution: Have lecture and lab classes, just like college
2
Problem Classes of up to 42 students in a class Not enough seats
Not safe Not a good learning environment
3
Currently Harming Students
Students cannot get the one-on-one attention they need Students can feel like their just a number and not an important member of the class. Shy students fade into the background Students are being lectured, not able to use hands on activities b/c too many students
4
Student Learning People only retain 10% of what is lectured to them.
People retain 80% when they produce something with their knowledge.
5
Currently Harming Teachers
Work load is atrocious (100+ essays) Cannot help lowest students Cannot challenge the highest students Teaching to the middle No time for good feedback to students No personal relationship with students Anxiety
6
Statistics at Baldwin 9th grade English: 37 students
Geometry this year: 42 students Last year Geometry: 45 students ___% of classes about 35 students
7
Rules According to Union Guidelines, teacher to student ratio is to be no more than 27:1. We are not abiding by that inside the classroom, but we are as a school.
8
Solution Lecture and Lab type classes
Fill the Lecture Hall with 75 students and have single teacher, just like in college. Lab days students split into 15 person groups. Group A Group B Even Days Lecture (75 students) Lab (15 students) Odd Days
9
Problems with the solution
For District Reducing class size is expensive. For Teachers Traditional teachers don’t like change Disparity in work loads between teachers? New way of thinking about schedule might throw people off.
10
Problems with the solution
For Students Confused about who is giving them grades Would use the excuse “I didn’t remember which class I was supposed to go to” when they are tardy More individual responsibility which not all would like.
11
Problems with my solution? NO WAY!
District/expensive: Not all schools in Hawaii have 35+ in their classrooms: what positions do they cut to make it work? Take out inclusion teaching. 24 extra classes for teachers to teach.
12
Problems with my solution? NO WAY!
Teachers: Change in education is inevitable. Will lessen the work load incredibly; only responsible for 45 kids throughout the day. More creative lessons. Teachers who like lecture can do the lecture and those who like hands on can do that!
13
Problems with my solution? NO WAY!
Students: Students will be more interactive in their own learning, so will be more willing to change. More responsibility will prepare better for college. Have schedules posted around campus so they know where they’re going. Only one teacher (Per subject) will be responsible for grading each student.
14
Unacceptable Students are our future, giving them a subpar education by stuffing them in classrooms is wrong. We need to find a better way. Lecture/Lab style is the better way!
15
Call to Action SCC Meeting Principal petition from students
Teacher vote: 66% in favor Stand up for what is right! It’s time to have smaller classes at Baldwin High School!
