Alzheimer’s disease PowerPoint made by: Monique Johnson 3-6-14
2
Definition progressive mental deterioration that can occur in middle or old age, due to generalized degeneration of the brain. It is the most common cause of premature senility.
3
Symptoms Alzheimer’s disease has four stages early, mild, moderate, and severe. Early Memory and thinking problems Poor judgment Mild Getting lost Repeating questions Losing things Mood and personality changes
4
Symptoms continued Moderate Severe Increased memory loss
Difficulty recognizing family and friends Unable to learn new things Hallucinations Impulsivity Severe unable to communicate Weight loss Seizures Skin infections
5
How it works the neurotransmitters get ruined by the plague inside the brain which turns the nerves into tangles. There is an enzyme called Alpha-secretase that cuts a part of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). Then another enzyme called Gamma-secretase cuts the APP. When the gamma cuts the APP they release the Beta-Amyloid, it will clump together and become toxic and it becomes a plague and destroys the brain transport system which creates tangles and the cell dies which causes the brain to shrink.
6
Diagnosing Alzheimer’s can only be a definite diagnosis after death but, doctors have a way of diagnosing. Diagnosis: Asking questions about health Tests of memory Medical tests (blood and urine tests) Brain scans (CAT, PET, MRI)
7
Affects which part Alzheimer’s affects three parts of your brain the cortex, hippocampus, and ventricles The cortex shrivels up, it damages the thinking, planning, and memories The hippocampus shrinks severely, it damages the ability to make new memories The ventricles is a fluid filled space that grows larger.
8
Psychological help To be a caregiver of a patient that has Alzheimer’s is an exhausting job. To cope: Excerise regularly Eat healthy Keep your health in order Ask for help when it is needed
9
